Lithium-ion battery

A lithium-ion battery or Li-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery composed of cells in which lithium ions move from the negative electrode through an electrolyte to the positive electrode during discharge and back when charging. Li-ion cells use an intercalated lithium compound as the material at the positive electrode and typically graphite at the negative electrode. Li-ion batteries have a high energy density, no memory effect (other than LFP cells) and low self-discharge. Cells can be manufactured to either prioritize energy or power density. They can however be a safety hazard since they contain flammable electrolytes and if damaged or incorrectly charged can lead to explosions and fires.

The cell in a Li-ion battery pack provides a higher energy density per unit volume and unit weight than Ni- based batteries. In addition, their higher voltage and lighter weight contribute significantly to the downsizing, weight reduction, and simplified operation of electronic devices.

The nominal voltage rating of the Lithium Ion cell is 3.60V, or three times the 1.20V rating of a Ni- based cell. Load characteristics are outstanding with flat discharge curves, providing effective use of stored energy in the range of 3.70V – 2.5V per cell.

Li-ion batteries require minimal maintenance as opposed to other cell chemistries. Self-discharge is less than half that of a Ni- based battery, with no concerns of ‘memory effect’.

The most common cell used for Li-ion / Lithium Ion battery packs in today’s market is the 18650 Li-ion cell. However, there are many other cylindrical or prismatic form cell options to choose from depending on the specific requirements of the application.
